Kamakura Sustainability Institute


Kamakura Sustainability Institute (KSI) was established in Kamakura,
Japan in 2017 with the aim of developing sustainability specialists who care about
the earth, people, and the future and contribute to the development of responsible businesses.
After a preparatory period while holding regular study sessions,
it was incorporated in 2018 and became a non-profit organization.
We believe that behavior change of each person is the most important factor in making a big change,
and we provide useful contents on
ESG investment, environmental issues, human rights issues, etc.
centering on sustainability to people who are active in each field.

Board members


Eiichiro Adachi

Director of The Japan Research Institute, Limited. Eiichiro Adachi started his career at the Japan Research Institute. Limited in 1990. After working in the management strategy department and technical department, he was appointed as a director and manages the sector research from the point of view of corporate responsibility as well as valuation. He is a member of the responsible management working committee at Japan Association of Corporate Executives, also, has engaged in formulation of the ISO26000 as a Japan expert. Currently, Mitsubishi Corporation sustainability advisory committee member, director of Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation, advisory board member of the Research Institute for Local Public Transport, and an advisor to Research Institute for Environmental Finance. He has publications on business and global warming, CSR, environmental management, ESG, natural capital, and corporate governance.


Makiko Akabane

CSR Asia Representative of Japan Makiko Akabane has experience launching CSR departments at Starbucks Coffee Japan, Salesforce.com, and Nikko asset management. She has provided many lectures to her clients including the Ministry of the Environment, World Bank, Keio University, Toyo Keizai Inc., and others. She has also reviewed a number of CSR reports of corporations. She is also; Director of WaterAid Japan, Adviser to Japan NGO center for International Cooperation “NGO and corporation network promotion”, and Community service committee member of Japan Football Association.


Ai Aonuma / Representative Director

Ai Aonuma has engaged in social audit and improvement of the working environment mainly at garments factories in Asia since 2011 after working for an SRI investment advisory company. Later she joined the sustainability department of a major apparel company and worked for ethical trading and engagement program for factory workers in Asia. Presently she is engaged in business and human rights in various industries such as apparel, electronics, food, and consumer while also providing sustainability consulting to several brands. also serves as a board member of Water Aid japan.


Toshikazu Hayashi / ESG Specialist Toshikazu /Director

Hayashi started being involved in ESG investment when he took part in a research project with Suisse asset management company that specialized in sustainable investment while he studied in the U.K. Since then, he has been working in the area, mainly in ESG research, promoting ESG investment and its development. With his motto to be a bridge between theory and practice, he puts knowledge of academia into practical fields as well as returns the experience in the real world to society. He also has experience in policy formulation on space development and nuclear disaster response in the central government office.


Tetsuo Kitagawa

Professor emeritus of Aoyama Gakuin University, Lecturer of Tokyo Metropolitan University Tetsuo Kitagawa worked for Nomura Research Institute and JP Morgan Chase & Co. as a research analyst before joining Aoyama Business School as a professor in 2005. Areas of expertise are ESG investment, corporate disclosure, and corporate governance. He is also a chair of a study group of ESG investment and gender equality at the Cabinet office as well as a chairman of IR good standing company award committee in Japan Investor Relations Association. His publication topics include backcasting and SDGs, ESG investment, sustainable management and capital market, and governance transformation.


Miho Kurosaki / Independent Climate Change/ESG Specialist /Director

Miho has 14 years of experience in ESG and climate change and advised policy makers including ministers, investors, companies on their ESG and climate change strategies based on analysis and data. She has managed a diversified team in Tokyo but also worked with global teams at Bloomberg. Miho has delivered many public speeches including committees with Japan’s Prime Minister and moderated international panel discussions such as in the G20. Miho holds an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London and a BA in Economics from Keio University in Tokyo.


Soichiro Moridaira

Professor emeritus of Keio University Ph.D. (Finance), University of Texas at Austin. He has held positions such as an associate professor of Fukushima University Faculty of Economics, chairman of the Japanese Association of Risk, Insurance, and Pensions, Institute of Economic Research of Kyoto University, researcher of the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies, Bank of Japan.
