"The Road to a Net Zero Company: What made Ørsted's transformation possible?" July 26 at 20:00 (JP time).
Kamakura Sustainability Institute (KSI.) welcomes you to our online seminar "The Road to a Net Zero Company: What made Ørsted's transformation possible?" on Wednesday, July 26 at 20:00 (Japan time).
Denmark based power giant Ørsted, which operates in more than 10 countries around the world, is the world's leading offshore wind company. However, it used to be a giant fossil fuel company covering the upstream and downstream value chain of coal, oil, and gas.
DONG Energy (prior to its name change to Ørsted), then one of the most coal-intensive companies in Europe, decided in 2008 to make a bold strategic shift to renewable energy and achieved the transformation in about a decade. The company has increased its share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources from 17% in 2006 to 90% in 2020, reduced its carbon emissions by 86% between 2007 and 2020 while nearly doubling their operating profit. Ørsted expects to achieve carbon neutrality in its own energy generation and operations by 2025 and in its supply chain by 2040.
If Japan is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and realize a decarbonized society, the efforts of businesses are crucial. After COP26, many Japanese companies have set 2050 net-zero targets and are working on transition plans. What does it mean for companies to commit to and achieve net zero?
In this seminar, we will have distinguished speakers, Ms. Henriette Holm, Country Manager Japan, and Mr. Nobuyasu Osaki, Manager of Policy and Regulatory Affairs, from Ørsted Japan K.K. with us, who will talk about Ørsted's business transformation from a fossil fuel company to a renewable energy company, and what made it possible. We will also discuss what is needed for the expansion of renewable energy in Japan and the roles expected of each player.
