19th/Dec(Mon) 20:00- Webinar “Business and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene challenges -Case study of apparel brand”

Globally, 771 million people, or about 1 in 10, live without access to clean water, which is making it hard to get out of the vicious cycle of poverty and sickness. It is projected that 33 countries will face extreme water stress by 2030 and 5 billion people will live in water scarce areas by 2050.

The impact on industries is also significant. In addition to water use in the production of raw materials and manufacturing processes, there are concerns about the regulations on water in various countries and the risk of water, sanitation and hygiene problems in local communities where their supply chains are located.

In this webinar, we take a case study from the apparel industry and discuss what businesses can do for the global water, sanitation and hygiene issues. The apparel industry requires large amounts of water from the production of raw materials and manufacturing processes such as dyeing to washing after purchase. Also, apparel workers in developing countries often live and work in unsanitary conditions with no access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, which in some cases results in the increased absenteeism and low productivity. As the industry is closely related to water issues, it’s expected to contribute to solving them.

This time we will learn about a program “WASH for garment waters” which is implemented by WaterAid, an international NGO, and a global apparel brand from the guest speakers from WaterAid UK and Bangladesh.
